From the Director of Facilities ManagementEdward CollinsThree years have gone by and I still feel very fortunate to be part of the Middletown School Department and being involved in educating the children of Middletown. Everyone from the bus monitors, bus drivers, custodians, maintenance people, teachers and administrators have a part in this. Collectively we build a base or foundation that is used to create a high learning environment. We are all part of building capacity in the Middletown School District. I have been involved in a lot different school settings, be it public, charter, Catholic or private and I feel Middletown stands right at the top. I know we have some of the best kept school buildings in the State. We continue to have other Facilities Directors tour our buildings to see what products we use how we do it. Middletown is out in front of every other school district when it comes to using “green certified” cleaning products. Our Core Committee along with Fielding Nair International did a great job creating a new educational plan. The “Strategy for Change” developed last year has put us in a good position to handle the recent budget crisis that has taken place in our State and across the nation. We have over 40 members from all aspects of the community that continue to put in a lot of time and effort into making sure we have a direction to go in and are improving the educational services we offer to the children of our town. We continue to position the schools in very good utility contracts to keep the cost down. We are also doing yearly projects to reduce the usage in the buildings. Energy audits are performed yearly to make sure what we are doing is resulting in avoiding higher cost and reducing usage. Every month as part of my piece of the school committee meetings I talk about how the schools are performing as far as usage and how we are doing in the contracts we entered. Though we are making positive changes there is still a lot of room for improvement in areas of “green energy”, reducing usage and recycling in the schools. If you walk through the schools you will items like custom trophy cases, book cases, remodeled wings like Forest Ave, remodeled libraries like Gaudet, buildings interiors that are repainted every 5 to 6 years, improved athletic fields and acoustical panels. Please realize that most of the work to get these thing done is being done by our staff. Ultimately, this saves the district a lot of money and would not all take place if we did not have the very talented staff we have. The Facilities management team will collectively use their talents, creativity and manpower to consistently achieve customer satisfaction. SCHOOL FACT: Over the next ten months 70% of the children’s time interacting with adults will come in our schools from employees of the Middletown School District. Make sure you are making a positive impact!
