MPS Social Studies Curriculum

The K-12 Curriculum identifies what all students should know and be able to do in Social Studies education. Each grade or course draws from  Rhode Island Grade Span Expectations for Social Studies, the Common Core State Standards for Literacy in History/Social Studies,  Science and Technical Subjects,  the National History Standards, research-based instructional strategies, resources, map (or suggested timeline), rubrics,  and checklists.    For additional information about the common core state standards please our standards page

MPS Social Studies Mission & Philosophy

Mission Statement

Our mission is to provide a comprehensive, integrated, and differentiated  K-12 Social Studies curriculum that is based upon research and best practice, ensuring that students become critical thinkers, effective communicators, and responsible citizens in a global and technological society.

Philosophy

 In Middletown Public Schools, we believe the Social Studies Program will:

  • Establish clear expectations and hold students to high standards adhering to the Common Core for ELA and Literacy in History/Social Studies, Rhode Island Social Studies Grade Span Expectations, Applied Learning Standards, and Student Learning Expectations (High School only).  
  • Provide a balanced approach to the teaching of reading and writing of informational text.  
  • Provide high quality instruction for students, using best practices, analysis of available data, and a variety of assessment strategies.
    • o    Differentiate instruction by varying content, process, and authentic products.
    • o    Encourage students to use multiple strategies to decode and comprehend a variety of text.
    • o    Drive instruction using common formative and summative assessments.
    • o    Utilize technology to enhance student learning and support effective teaching.  
  • Actively engage prior knowledge and build new knowledge to develop mastery and understanding of civics and government, historical perspectives, economics, and geography.  
  • Encourage students to become confident and effective communicators, proficient readers, critical thinkers, and responsible citizens and life-long learners.      
  • Integrate instruction with other disciplines and prepare students for reading and writing in society 
  • Support educator growth and professional development opportunities within the district, region, and national organizations.  
  • Provide opportunities and resources for historical thinking that include:
    • o    Chronological thinking
    • o    Historical comprehension
    • o    Historical analysis and interpretation
    • o    Historical research capabilities
    • o    Historical issues – analysis and decision-making
