"We are currently preparing students for jobs that don't yet exist....using technologies that haven't yet been invented....in order to solve problems we don't even know are problems yet."
- Richard Riley, former U. S. Secretary of Education

Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College & Careers (PARCC) is the state assessment that is annually administered to assess whether students are meeting these new, higher academic standards and mastering the knowledge and skills necessary for K-12 and beyond.   These standards are called the Common Core State Standards (CCSS).  These standards were adopted by Rhode Island in 2010.  The CCSS address both the core academic knowledge and the complex thinking skills that are required for success in college, life and career in the 21st century.

It is difficult to discuss the PARCC assessment without discussing the CCSS.  The quote from Richard Riley at the top of this page reminds us why we needed to commit to these standards, the pedagogical change and the educational shifts necessary in today's classroom.  The CCSS allows us to bring consistency and uniformity across many states and districts.  We focus on (1) depth, not width, (2) an increase in nonfiction, (3) providing evidence, (4) speaking and listening, (5) technology embedded into most/all standards, (6) life skills being emphasized across subject areas (7) an increase in rigor.  As previously stated, PARCC is annually administered to assess whether our students are meeting the CCSS.  The PARCC assessment is administered to students in grades 3-10 in the areas of math and ELA (reading & language usage).  High school assessments are specifically administered to English 9, English 10, Algebra I and Geometry students.  During the Spring of 2015 students took the assessment in two separate testing windows.  In the Spring of 2016 the students had one testing window.  All students in Middletown take PARCC on a computer.

Beginning in the Spring of 2017 our high school students will only take ELA 9 and Algebra I.  Grade 11 students will all participate in SAT assessments.
