The Middletown School Department participates in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP), and the School Breakfast Program (SBP). These programs are administered by the RI Department of Education with oversight provided by USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture).

Middletown Public Schools has partnered with Chartwells to map out a comprehensive approach to the health and well-being of the students we serve called Balanced Choices®. Balanced Choices® was designed by Chartwells to aid schools in not only meeting their wellness goals, but far exceeding them. It exactly mirrors our Eat.Learn.Live philosophy and represents the three fundamental characteristics that guide everything we do.

  • EAT reflects our nutrition standards, defining the quality of our food with customized meals and menus for each school district.

  • LEARN focuses on providing students the nutrition and physical activity education they need to make wise food choices now, which will establish the foundation for them to enjoy a long and healthy life.

  • LIVE through physical activity and the promotion of a healthy school environment, our programs assist teachers, parents and students to bring our lessons to life in the classroom and at home.

Fueling Student Success

Education is paramount. We believe food should be a discovery, an adventure, and that kids learn more when they are experiencing something versus simply taking in information. Our education programs are built on this belief and designed to provide engaging and impactful food discovery experiences. Our Discovery Kitchen curriculum and events will bring interactive learning experiences to our schools as an extension of the traditional classroom.

 To file a program complaint of discrimination, complete the USDA Program Discrimination Complaint Form, (AD-3027) found online at: How to File a Complaint, and at any USDA office, or write a letter addressed to USDA and provide in the letter all of the information requested in the form.
