Our ELA Mission Statement .

We are committed to providing a comprehensive, integrated, and differentiated  K-12 English Language Arts curriculum that is based upon research and best practice, ensuring that students become critical thinkers, proficient readers, writers, and communicators in a global and technological society.

Our ELA Philosophy 

In Middletown Public Schools we believe the ELA Program will: 

  • Establish clear expectations and hold students to high standards adhering to the Common Core of English Language Arts Standards, Grade Level/Grade Span Expectations , Applied Learning Standards, and Student Learning Expectations.

  •  Provide a balanced approach to the teaching of reading and writing.  

  • Provide high quality instruction for students, using best practices, analysis of available data, and a variety of assessment strategies.

    • Differentiate instruction by varying content, process, and authentic products.

    • Encourage students to use multiple strategies to decode and comprehend a variety of text.

    • Drive instruction using common formative and summative assessments.

    • Utilize technology to enhance student learning and support effective teaching. 

  • Actively engage prior knowledge and build new knowledge to develop mastery and understanding of reading and written language. 

  • Encourage students to become confident and effective communicators, proficient readers, critical thinkers, and life-long learners.

  • Provide students with opportunities and resources to develop English Language Arts skills they need to pursue life’s goals and to participate fully as informed, productive members of society. 

  • Integrate instruction with other disciplines and prepare students for reading and writing in the workplace. 

  • Support educator growth and professional development opportunities within the district, region, and national organizations.
